Caring for our whole self —mind, body, and spirit—is always critical. But our wellness rituals are even more critical when life feels unsteady and uncertain.
Particularly when life is bumpy, I remind myself to lean in to these research-supported basics of self-care: the small, everyday grounding practices and routines that help restore balance and stability.
They help us to bring our best selves to the table. Both for ourselves and others.
-
Embrace the power of scent: Research shows that essential oils influence our mood by stimulating the olfactory system, which is directly connected to the brain’s emotional center. For grounding and calming, try soothing oils like frankincense, cedarwood, and vetiver. For uplifting energy, citrus oils like sweet orange, lemon, and grapefruit help ease anxiety and brighten the mood. Whether in a diffuser or in your body care products, natural aromatic compounds are a valuable support to emotional well-being. (Always choose 100% natural essential oils and avoid synthetic fragrance oils).
-
Move your body frequently: Studies have long confirmed that movement (including gentle stretching and walking) releases endorphins and reduces stress hormones. And this in turn lifts our mood and sharpens our mental focus. Prioritize adding movement breaks and intentional activity to each day - in whatever way feels best to you.
-
Eat nourishing, whole foods: Foods rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, phytonutrients and fiber (like leafy greens, colorful vegetables and berries, nuts, and fish) improve brain function and resilience to stress. Give yourself the best possible fuel at mealtimes. And add a warm cup of herbal tea and a nourishing snack in between. (Just steer clear of processed foods, refined sugars, and chemical additives, no matter how tempting, since they deplete our energy, mood, and function.)
-
Pause for mindful breathing: Deep breathing activates the vagus nerve, which helps us shift from a stress response to a calmer, more relaxed state. The vagus nerve is our main internal superhighway for mind-body connection, as it coordinates information between our brain and internal organs. A simple practice to start with is box breathing: gently inhale for four counts, pause for four counts, exhale for four counts, pause for four counts. Repeat for several rounds, as often as needed.
-
Start and end your day with gratitude: Gratitude practices can reshape neural pathways, making it easier for us to notice the positives in our lives, even during challenging times. At both ends of your day, reflect on one thing you’re grateful for—it’s a powerful way to build resilience.
