Imbolc: The Subtle Shift Toward Spring

Imbolc: The Subtle Shift Toward Spring

As February begins, here in the Northern hemisphere the cold of winter is still here - but things are quietly shifting. The days are just a bit longer. The light stretches further. Imbolc has arrived. It's the ancient celebration that marks the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox: a subtle but powerful threshold in the natural cycle.

Rooted in Celtic traditions where it was considered the first day of spring, Imbolc is closely tied to Brigid, the goddess of fire and fertility. It’s a time to honor the return of the sun, the first stirring of life beneath the soil, and the promise of renewal. In agrarian cultures, it signaled the start of lambing season—evidence that even in the cold, new life was on its way.

Today, many people still celebrate Imbolc as a time to welcome the growing light and set intentions for the season ahead. Candles are often lit to symbolize warmth and inspiration, and simple rituals—like cleansing spaces, making herbal teas, or spending quiet moments in nature—can help us tune into this shift. It’s a gentle reminder that even the smallest changes hold meaning.

The older I get, the more I appreciate wheel-of-the-year traditions like Imbolc. They offer a natural rhythm to reflect, reset, and align with the seasons. In a world that often feels fast and disconnected, these moments create space to notice the shifts in nature—and in ourselves.

Consider this your invitation to pause and notice... what small shifts are happening, both around you and within you?

Cheers to all the subtle, new beginnings.
Much love,
