What are Hydrosols? A Guide to Plant Waters in Skincare

In the world of natural ingredients, some ingredients steal the spotlight, while others quietly work their magic behind the scenes. Hydrosols are among the quiet ones — delicate yet deeply valuable allies for healthy, balanced skin.

Often overshadowed by more well-known botanicals, hydrosols are incredibly versatile. If your skin leans sensitive, dehydrated, or reactive, they can be one of the most supportive additions to your skincare routine.

So what makes them so special — and why are they worth bringing into your daily rhythms? Let’s take a closer look.

First what are they?

Hydrosols are the aromatic waters created during the steam distillation of fresh plant material — flowers, leaves, stems, or bark. The word literally means water (hydro) solution (sol).

They’re sometimes referred to as distillates, hydrolats, or flower waters (though the category includes far more than just flowers).

Because hydrosols are water-based and minimally processed, they benefit from thoughtful storage. Like any fresh plant preparations, they’re perishable and are best kept in cool, dark conditions — some even benefit from refrigeration to preserve their vibrancy.

How does steam distillation work?

You might be familiar with distillation through alcohol or essential oil production. The general concept is similar for both — heating plant material and cooling the resulting vapors — but the process differs depending on the end product.

Alcohol distillation involves a fermented plant mash (often grains or fruit) that’s heated. Because alcohol has a lower boiling point than water, it vaporizes first and is collected as it cools.

Essential oil steam distillation, however, involves one aromatic plant at a time — like freshly cut lavender — with steam passing through the plant material. As the steam moves through, it pulls out both aromatic oils and water-soluble plant compounds.

As the vapor cools and condenses, it separates naturally into two distinct substances:

  1. Concentrated essential oils
Containing the plant’s fat-soluble aromatic compounds.

  2. Water-based hydrosols
Containing water-soluble plant compounds, along with trace micro-molecules of the plant’s oil dispersed throughout.

Here’s a simplified visual of the steam distillation process:

How are hydrosols different from essential oils?

A plant’s hydrosol carries many of the same therapeutic properties as its essential oil — but in a much gentler form.

It may be tempting to think of a hydrosol as simply a “watered-down” version of a plant’s oil, but that wouldn’t be accurate. A hydrosol has its own distinct chemistry — containing both subtle aromatic compounds and water-soluble plant components that aren’t captured in an essential oil. The result is a softer, more subtle expression of the plant.

Hydrosols are also safe for direct application to the skin. In contrast, essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before use.

I think of hydrosols as an understated element of skincare — not flashy, but deeply supportive. Gentle, adaptable, and foundational to everything layered with them.

    What about scent?

Hydrosols carry a much softer, subtle aroma than essential oils — and sometimes they smell surprisingly different.

Ylang ylang hydrosol, for example, has a familiar floral note but with a fresher, greener twist. Neroli hydrosol is lighter and more airy than its essential oil counterpart.

If you expect a hydrosol to smell exactly like the plant, some may be disappointing. But their value isn’t only in scent — it’s in the full spectrum of plant properties held within the water.

    A note on sourcing

Not all products labeled “hydrosols” are true hydrosols.

✅ Authentic hydrosols are created only through the steam distillation of a single plant — with nothing added and nothing diluted.

⛔ Mixing essential oils with water is not a hydrosol.
⛔ Mixing plant extracts with water is not a hydrosol.

What are the benefits of using hydrosols?

Each hydrosol offers its own plant-specific properties, but there are shared qualities that make them a valuable addition to skincare and wellness rituals.

    Gentle + skin-compatible
Because they’re so mild, hydrosols are safe for direct application without dilution. They’re suitable for nearly all skin types — including sensitive or reactive skin — and are often appropriate for children, elders, and even animals (with plant-specific discretion).

    Hydrating + barrier supportive
Hydrosols add an essential water component to skincare routines. Layered beneath oils or creme, they help improve hydration and support the skin barrier by reducing moisture loss.

    Nutrient-rich + soothing
They contain water-soluble plant compounds — including antioxidants, flavonoids, and trace elements — that help calm, nourish, and restore the skin.

    Microbiome + pH supportive
Hydrosols are naturally pH-aligned with the skin — helping maintain a balanced acid mantle while offering gentle antimicrobial support.

    Emotional + nervous system support
Because their aroma is so soft, hydrosols offer subtle aromatherapy without overwhelming the senses — gently calming, uplifting, or steadying the nervous system during times of stress or fatigue.

    Multi-functional + ritual-friendly
Hydrosols are incredibly versatile and easy to incorporate into daily rhythms. They can be used as:

    • Facial toners or mists

    • Body sprays

    • Soothing compresses (including eye compresses)

    • Cooling sprays for overheated or sun-exposed skin

    • Linen or pillow mists

    • Gentle skin-soothing sprays

    • Mood-refreshing mists throughout the day

Which Pure Luxe Apothecary formulas feature hydrosols?

    Rosewater Hydrating Face Tonic

Rose hydrosol is a classic — known for its hydrating, calming, and softly toning properties — and is the star of this formula. It helps balance the skin’s natural pH, soothe visible redness, and leave your complexion feeling refreshed and comforted.

The formula also includes alcohol-free witch hazel — a gentle plant astringent that helps refine pores, tone the skin, and clear away sweat or buildup without the stripping effect of traditional alcohol-based toners. Liquid aloe is included as well, adding an extra layer of soothing hydration that keeps the blend feeling balanced and skin-supportive.

This tonic works beautifully for a range of skin needs — offering light hydration while feeling especially refreshing for oily or combination skin, post-workout skin, or as a morning reset after sleep.

Used daily, it creates a foundational water layer — preparing your skin to better receive oils, serums, and cremes applied afterward.

    Neroli Face Mist

Neroli Face Mist offers a slightly different purpose in its blend of hydrosols — both aromatic and skin-restorative.

At the heart of the formula is neroli hydrosol, cherished for its gently rejuvenating properties and softly uplifting aroma. It’s especially supportive for mature, sensitive, or hormonally shifting skin — while also offering subtle emotional support during times of stress or fatigue.

Also included in the formula, rose hydrosol adds an extra element of hydration, while chamomile hydrosol brings calming, anti-inflammatory benefits — creating a mist that supports both skin and nervous system in one step.

Misted over the face post-cleansing, Neroli Face Mist acts as a preparatory water layer before oils or creme are applied. It can also be used throughout the day as a skin soother or mini reset — whenever your complexion, mood, or energy needs a gentle lift.

It’s an especially lovely companion for travel, long days, or seasonal transitions when both skin and nervous system benefit from extra support.

Hydrosols are an elegant way to bring plant intelligence into your daily skincare rituals — offering hydration, gentle therapeutic support, and a quiet connection to the natural world.

I hope you enjoy using them as much as I do!
